At St Luke’s, this is what it means to be a Christian school

A purpose-driven Christian education.

May 28, 2025

At St Luke’s, we aim to be a place where all students are deeply known, loved, and equipped to live with wisdom, courage, and compassion.

More than Christian values:  St Luke’s is not merely a school with Christian values – it is rooted in the message of the Gospel and shaped by a Christ-centred worldview. Values like love, humility, and justice are taught and lived in the full context of the Christian faith – not in isolation, but as responses to God’s love, grace, and truth. We intentionally live out the Gospel in everyday school life.

The school environment relative to church ministry:  St Luke’s holds the Bible as the ultimate authority in matters of faith. We are not affiliated with a specific denomination but see ourselves as part of the broader body of Christ, partnering with families and churches in the holistic education of children.  In practice, this means we might open events and lessons with prayer, read Scripture or reflect on biblical themes in class or assemblies, and host chapel events. We do not offer religious instruction as an academic subject, administer sacraments, or engage in denomination-specific practices, as we believe these are better suited to local church ministry.

A clear and gracious faith:  We affirm the historic, central truths of Christianity, outlined in our Statement of Faith, below. On non-core doctrines where Christians may differ, we do not take a fixed stance. Instead, we encourage respectful dialogue and prioritise unity in Christ. We welcome Christian and non-Christian families who support our ethos. All students are expected to respectfully participate in Christian activities.  We do not offer opt-outs, nor do we permit the open practice of other religions or behaviours clearly and publicly opposed to the Christian faith within the school community.

St Luke’s Statement of Faith

As a Christian school, we affirm the following core beliefs of the Christian faith:

God: We believe in one God, eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – who created all things and holds all things together.

The Bible: We believe the Bible is the inspired, authoritative Word of God, and is our ultimate guide in all matters of faith and life.

Jesus Christ: We believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, fully God and fully man. He lived a sinless life, died on the cross for our sins, rose bodily from the dead, and reigns as Lord.

Salvation: We believe that we are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ – not by our own works. Through His death and resurrection, we are reconciled to God and offered eternal life.

The Holy Spirit: We believe the Holy Spirit is active in the world today – drawing people to Christ, empowering believers for holy living, and guiding us into all truth.

The Church: We believe in the global Church as the body of Christ, made up of all true believers, called to love God, love others, and make disciples of all nations.

The Return of Christ: We believe that Jesus will return one day to judge the living and the dead, and to fully establish His kingdom.
